Research shows that spirituality has great relevance in the field of palliative care, regardless of the stage of the disease. In this sense, the present study aimed to evaluate the skills of nurses related to the needs and spiritual care of patients hospitalized in palliative care units. This was a quantitative, descriptive, exploratory research, through the application of two questionnaires: a sociodemographic and professional and the Spiritual Care Competence Scale, validated in Brazil in 2020. Seventeen nurses from a referral hospital in palliative care in the Federal District were interviewed. It was found that communication and attitudes related to patient spirituality reached the highest levels of competence among nurses. However, they had lower levels of competence focused on the evaluation and implementation of spiritual care and the referrals of spiritual care to other professionals. Although nurses agree on the importance of spirituality in palliative care, there is still a need for better discussion about what spiritual care is and how to implement it in these sectors.
