Feelings and emotions faced by health professionals in oncology palliative care

Abstract

This study aims to identify the feelings and emotions faced by health professionals while working in oncology palliative care. This is a scoping review, based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) recommendations, carried out in seven electronic databases and whose review protocol was registered on the Open Science Framework platform. In the database searches, it was possible to obtain a total of 623 publications, and ten articles were selected according to the eligibility criteria. The studies are characterized by research carried out between 2011 and 2023 in countries such as the USA, Australia, China, Japan, Ghana, England and Iran, which showed emotional changes in health professionals associated with stress due to coping with the death process in care. to cancer patients in palliative care, characterizing teams in suffering, with feelings of sadness and helplessness, as well as fear and a feeling of loss when providing care. It is concluded that there is a need to implement strategies and programs to support health professionals working in oncology palliative care, aiming to contribute to the maintenance of the mental and emotional health of these professionals, which could have an impact on the improvement of services provided to patients in oncology palliative care.
