Stress and burnout among dentists: a narrative review
Abstract
Justification: Dentistry has been considered a stressful profession, often associated with health problems, both physical and mental. Stress and burnout syndrome are prevalent problems affecting dental professionals around the world. Objective: This article aims to provide a current comprehensive review of the state of research on stress and burnout in the dental profession. Method: The research was carried out in May 2024, and data collection was carried out on the following search portals: PUBMED, Scientific Electronic Library Online and Connected Papers. Original articles, literature reviews, theses and dissertations, gray literature in English, Spanish and Portuguese, published in the last 10 years, were considered for inclusion. Final Considerations: By identifying the underlying causes, manifestations, and consequences of stress and burnout in dentistry, stakeholders can implement specific interventions to support dental surgeons' mental health and resilience.Keywords: Stress, burnout syndrome, dentists.
