To know how nurses from Basic Health Units perceive care for children with Down Syndrome. This is an exploratory and descriptive research of a qualitative nature that was developed in 4 basic health units in a city in the interior of Bahia, with the participation of 8 nurses who work in the child health care services of these units. Data collection was through a semi-structured interview with the aid of a script. Data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The nurses recognize that it is a health problem arising from a genetic alteration, which leads the child to have some limitations, needing to be monitored by a multidisciplinary team from the first year of life. Training courses are needed for nursing professionals, not just about the importance of this service.
