Factors associated with risky alcohol consumption among Brazilian college students during the pandemic

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the pattern of alcohol consumption among college students during the first wave of the pandemic and to determine factors associated with risky use. This was a cross-sectional study in which a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) were applied to 413 students. Most students had a low-risk alcohol consumption pattern (84.7%) and 15.3% had a risky consumption pattern. Those who evaluated their physical health as “poor”; were smoking and used medications on their own were more likely to have a risky use pattern during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is important to develop prevention and brief intervention strategies for this population in the university environment.
