Nursing care for people with respiratory stomas
an integrative review
Abstract
Introduction: Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure to maintain the airway by means of a tracheal tube. Nursing is essential in managing the device and preventing complications. Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence regarding nursing care for people with respiratory ostomies. Method: An integrative literature review using PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL and LILACS, with no time frame. Controlled terms were used in Portuguese, English and Spanish, combined with the “AND” and “OR” operators. Results: The studies showed that nursing care for the person with a respiratory stoma involves cannula management, prevention of complications, aspiration of secretions and continuous assessment. They also highlighted the importance of professional training and communication adapted to the tracheostomized patient. Conclusion: Well-structured nursing interventions that integrate technical, psychosocial and contextual aspects are fundamental to improving care for people with respiratory stomas, promoting safety, adaptation and quality of life.
