Abstract

Anencephaly can be defined as the complete or partial absence of the brain caused by internal or external factors and according to the World Health Organization, Brazil is fourth in the number of births of anencephalic fetuses (1/1600 live births), behind only from Mexico, Chile and Paraguay. This study aims to study the prevalence of anencephaly in the population of the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and São Paulo. This is a literature review, with searches in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) using the following descriptors: Nursing AND Congenital anomalies AND Anencephaly. The inclusion criteria used were full texts, in Portuguese and published between 2013 and 2023. 2720 articles were found that had their contents read, of which 6 were selected for critical reading, the DATASUS database was also used. Using the articles found, it was possible to separate them into 3 categories: nursing care for postpartum women with newborns with malformations, prevention of fetal malformations and nursing care for newborns with malformations, where the relationship was made with the DATASUS data. It was possible to conclude that anencephaly is becoming a public health emergency through epidemiological data and how the nurse can deal with this situation, the role of the nurse in the scenario of congenital anomalies, has brought with it the autonomy that the nurse has by applying knowledge to be able to provide quality care, planning and care for that pregnant woman.
