Introduction: To describe the knowledge of nursing students about essential care to prevent pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation. Materials & Methods: This is a descriptive study with a quantitative nature carried out with 135 students completing the nursing course at a Higher Education Institution located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Data collection was carried out in October 2023, after approval of the project by the Research Ethics Committee, using a structured questionnaire containing 12 closed questions. The data were treated using descriptive statistics, with the variables presented using absolute frequency and percentage. Results: Only five questions reached a percentage equal to or greater than 80% of the statements. The question with the most correct answers relates to hand hygiene with 100% (n=135) correct answers. While the question referring to when the professional should evaluate the equipment had the highest percentage of errors, 56% (n=75). Discussion: Regarding the evaluation of assertive responses about pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation, it was evident that students know preventive actions, but still have limited knowledge regarding some topics, especially specific care. Conclusion: The students' level of knowledge was more assertive when it came to questions about general care, however, when asked about prevention measures directly related to pneumonia associated with mechanical ventilation, there was a limitation in the students' knowledge.
