To describe the main factors that interact in the breastfeeding process. This is a bibliographic review of the literature, carried out on the Virtual Health Library platform. For inclusion in this study, the papers should be scientific articles published in the last 10 years with the presence of descriptors in the abstracts. A total of 10 articles were included in this work. The works dealt with publications of experience reports, literature review and other qualitative works. The results showed that breastfeeding is a beneficial practice in terms of affective aspects and disease prevention for the mother-child binomial. The difficulties of the practice are of a socio-cultural nature, involving issues related to the mother's universe, but also of assistance origin. The support network was mostly constituted by the family. However, nursing emerges as an important member of the support network. It is concluded that although the task of breastfeeding is a complex practice and crossed by factors that make its maintenance difficult, it is of fundamental importance for the child's life, and also beneficial for the mother's life. In addition to the importance of the biopsychosocial impact, breastfeeding is a topic that needs attention and investments both professionally and socially. In this way, the promotion of breastfeeding must be a demand of extreme relevance for public health.
