Introduction: the role of nurses in the Family Health Strategy (ESF) takes place in four different work processes, cognition, assistance, management and education. The obscurity of such execution has been continually recognized in Brazil. Materials and methods: this is an integrative review that aims to report and condense results of independent examinations on the same topic, contributing to a beneficial follow-up to the implementation of the Family Health Strategy from the perspective of nurses. Results: 24 articles were analyzed that met the previously established inclusion criteria and, below, an overview of the articles evaluated will be presented, with the exception of one of them, as it is in the editorial category. Discussion: the profile of ESF team professionals corresponds, for the most part, to the same standard in all Brazilian regions. Almost all are female, with the exception of the medical category. Final considerations: the act of research is completed in the processing of the text encoded by the expectations, prescriptions and tolerances of the cultural-scientific-editorial institution, leaving aside the analysis of implications, as only the result counts.
