Celiac disease after bariatric surgery: Complications and impact on quality of life

The literature review covers aspects of the post-bariatric surgery period and the development of celiac disease after this intervention, exploring the life changes of these individuals and the nutritional challenges they face due to intestinal malabsorption due to the reduction of levothyroxine (L-T4). The importance of this work is to highlight some of the complications and adverse effects associated with bariatric surgery, with a focus on celiac disease. The aim of the article is to demonstrate that although bariatric surgery is an interference surgery that improves the quality of life of obese people, it can bring future difficulties. Articles published between 2019 and 2024 were found on Google Scholar, PubMed and LILACS and the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. The conclusion that nutritional monitoring is essential for bariatric patients and that the techniques used to perform bariatric surgery can develop celiac disease in these patients.
