Introduction: Schizophrenia is one of the most complex and challenging mental illnesses, affecting approximately 20 million people worldwide. This condition profoundly impacts the lives of patients, their families, and society in general. Nurses are at the forefront of care, providing essential clinical and emotional support to patients and their families. Objective: To investigate the impact of active family participation in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with schizophrenia, as well as the role of nurses in promoting the well-being of both patients and their families. Materials and Methods: This is an integrative literature review with a descriptive and exploratory approach. Searches for scientific articles were conducted in the electronic databases: National Library of Medicine (PUBMED), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SciELO), Nursing Database (BDENF), and MEDLINE, all accessed the Virtual Health Library (VHL), through the applicability of the Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS): and the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), in order to ensure international coverage. In DeCS: “Schizophrenia”, “Coping”, “Strategies” e “Nursing”, in MeSH: “Schizophrenia”, “Coping”, “Strategies”, and “Nursing", combined using the Boolean operator AND. Results and Discussion: Eight studies were selected for analysis. It was evidenced that active family participation in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with schizophrenia plays a crucial role in promoting the well-being of both patients and their families. Conclusions: Family involvement plays a crucial role in treatment adherence and therapeutic outcomes. Nurses play a central role in educating families about the disease, helping them develop effective coping skills and support strategies, improving treatment adherence, and reducing stress and emotional burdens on family members.
