Situational diagnosis is a health management tool that enables understanding the social and health problems and needs of a given territory. This study aimed to report the experience of constructing a Situational Health Diagnosis of a Family Health Strategy in the municipality of Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais. This is an experience report that emerges from the experience of residents of the Multidisciplinary Residency Program in Family Health in a municipality. The mapping allowed identifying general aspects of the FHS, the work process in the unit, characterization of users and socioeconomic conditions, and knowledge of the territorial area covered. Knowing the territory and performing the health diagnosis of the unit and the population served enables the development of skills to better meet the demands and needs of the population.
