Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common forms of malignant neoplasms in men. Such a high prevalence of prostate cancer requires the development of methods ranging from prevention, early detection to highly effective therapeutic treatments. There are a variety of surgical treatment options available for prostate cancer, which can be radical or focal. Among the focal options, the most notable are ablation using sound waves, laser and cryoablation. The objective of this article is to conduct a literature review on prostate ablation techniques and their approach as a basic therapy in focal prostate cancer. The PubMed and BVS databases were used with the descriptors prostate cancer, therapies and ablation. For inclusion criteria, scientific articles published between 2021 and 2024 were used in full text of the systematic review type, excluding duplicate and off-topic articles. After search refinements and exclusion, a total of 24 articles were found, 22 from PubMed and 2 from BVS. Studies show an effective oncological response with preservation of urinary function and erection, generating a significant increase in the quality of life of patients after PCa treatment. Most of them are low risk, but common complications are hematuria, urinary tract infection and urethral stricture, varying according to the type of ablation. Even in the scientific solidification stage, prostate ablation is considered a promising technique in the basic therapy of focal prostate cancer, being safe, minimally invasive and with a reduced risk of surgical complications.
