Challenges in Nursing practice in the care of elderly people with Alzheimer's Disease – Narrative review
Abstract
Alzheimer's Disease (AD), first described in 1906 by physician Alois Alzheimer, is characterized as the most common neurodegenerative disorder among the elderly, with risk increasing with age and a multifactorial origin. Among the professionals who play an important role in caring for patients affected by this condition are nurses. Thus, the present study aimed to discuss the main challenges faced by nursing professionals in this context through a narrative literature review conducted with scientific articles available in the databases of the Virtual Health Library (BVS), Scielo, and Google Scholar. The included studies highlight the level of knowledge about the disease, as well as the burden on professionals, as the greatest challenges faced. The pursuit of professional development is also presented as another factor discussed by the authors included in this review. Therefore, strengthening public policies that provide continuing education for these professionals, health education for family members, and space for discussion about the multiple nuances involved in the caregiving process emerges as a possible way to mitigate this issue.
