This study aims to assess how nursing care is provided to patients with chronic pyelonephritis, using Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Theory as a theoretical framework to illuminate the practice. This is a qualitative study using the SciELO, LILACS, BDENF, PubMed and Google Scholar databases, applying the PICO strategy. The results show that in their practice scenario, nurses act as mediators of the therapeutic process, promoting self-care, preventing complications and strengthening bonds with patients living with chronic disease. It is concluded that practice based on nursing theories is a fundamental step to characterize care for patients with Chronic Kidney Disease, especially those with chronic pyelonephritis.
