The present study aimed to identify the necessary clinical and social knowledge for approaching and identifying domestic violence by dental surgeons. A literature review was carried out with a mixed approach, based on the bibliography available in the data bases: Google Scholar, PubMED, BVS, SciELO, Portal CAPES de teses e dissertações, in addition to consulting the DATASUS/M.S. data base, technical and scientific documents and legislations. Most of the victims were women, single, young and adult, black, the aggressors being men, partners and ex-partners of the victim and they carried out aggression without the use of weapons. The damage caused can be psychological, family, sexual and physical, with frequent injuries to the head and neck, mainly to soft tissues and the middle third of the face. Therefore, the dentist's role is to help reduce, prevent and identify domestic violence, in addition to reporting cases.
