Abstract

Introduction: Patient safety is a topic that is currently being widely discussed in the health sector and is gaining global repercussions. In Brazil, the Ministry of Health instituted the National Patient Safety Program, seeking to contribute to the qualification of health care in all health establishments in the national territory. Objective: To understand the relevance of patient safety from the point of view of undergraduate nursing students material and methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach, and data was collected at UNIG (Iguaçu University) campus 1, located in the Baixada Fluminense. It should be noted that the ethical principles of National Health Council Resolution (CNS) No. 466/2012 were complied with. Results and discussion: Data analysis showed that the vast majority of interviewees reported having knowledge of the care needed to maintain patient integrity, but that they felt afraid to carry it out during their internship, which could have repercussions on their professional practices. Furthermore, many mid-level nursing professionals report a lack of knowledge about patient safety. Conclusion: Therefore, measures need to be implemented so that professional fears can be overcome, as well as the deficit in knowledge about Patient Safety. In this way, the definition of this theme will be fulfilled.
