Abstract

Introduction: Urgent and emergency care services are responsible for meeting a large part of the demand for health care in Brazil, and are considered to be the front line in this area. It is currently being discussed that, despite the benefits of care provided to human beings by the nursing team, there is still the possibility of errors and/or adverse events occurring Objective: To understand the relevance of patient safety from the perspective of undergraduate nursing students Materials and Methods: This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach, and data collection was carried out at UNIG (Universidade Iguaçu) campus 1, located in the Baixada Fluminense. It should be noted that the ethical principles of National Health Council Resolution (CNS) No. 466/2012 were complied with. Results and Discussion: analysis of the data revealed that there is a lack of knowledge on the subject of patient safety among academics, and that this problem is less prevalent among those who already work as nursing technicians. However, these professionals report that their knowledge of the subject comes from their day-to-day experiences and not from their training. In addition, there are reports of insecurity about nursing practices, which corroborates the occurrence of complications arising from care. Conclusion: It was therefore found that there is a need to restructure the curriculum so that it takes more account of this issue and has more practical lessons with students so that they feel more secure in their duties.
