The prevalence of elderly people with dementia is one of the consequences of population aging. Cognitive screening tests contribute to neurocognitive assessment, and refer to instruments that allow global assessment of cognition, which facilitates the identification of changes and enables interventions, such as monitoring the elderly and early diagnosis of dementia. The aim of this study is to identify the effectiveness of the instruments used to screen for cognitive decline in the progression of dementia in the elderly. Based in systematic review of the literature, which included observational and experimental studies that used tools to screen for cognitive decline in people over 60. Searches will be carried out in comprehensive databases, without language restrictions. It will follow all the methodological steps recommended for systematic reviews according to the Joan Briggs Institute. We hope to identify studies that show which instruments were most effective for screening cognitive decline, understanding the relevance of their application for the early diagnosis and progression of dementia. This study is in progress and the protocol has been approved by PROSPERO under the number CRD42023493019.
